SIGKDD Explorations December 2009 Special Issue: Call for Papers

Special Issue on Visual Analytics and Knowledge Discovery

This Special Issue (December 2009) will focus on Visual Analytics and Knowledge Discovery and will be edited by Kai Puolamäki (Helsinki University of Technology) and Alessio Bertone (Danube University Krems).

The goal of Visual Analytics is to derive insight from massive, dynamic, ambiguous, and often conflicting data; detect the expected and discover the unexpected; provide timely, defensible, and understandable assessments; and communicate the assessment effectively for action.

The Special Issue will include both invited and contributed papers on Visual Analytics and Knowledge Discovery. We solicit submission based on selected papers presented at the ACM SIGKDD Workshop on Visual Analytics and Knowledge Discovery (VAKD '09, <http://www.hiit.fi/vakd09/>). The workshop authors are strongly encouraged to revise their submissions, and to take into account the earlier reviewers' comments and the feedback at the workshop. We will also consider outstanding contributions that were not submitted to the workshop. The papers to be published in the Special Issue will be selected through a peer-review process.

The papers should introduce new research results, present forward-looking positional statements, or define relevant research challenges. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

We encourage the authors to use the IEEE VAST 2008 challenge tasks to demonstrate the methods and concepts proposed in the contributions.

The papers must be submitted by 1 September 2009 using electronic submission system at <http://www.hiit.fi/vakd09/kddexplorations.html>. The submissions should be in pdf format and the length of the papers should be 10 pages or less. Detailed formatting instructions are available at <http://www.acm.org/sigs/sigkdd/explorations/submissions.php>.

Electronic Submission

The papers must be submitted by 1 September 2009 23:59 UTC-11 (pdf files only; max file size 10 MB; title and abstract lengths max 256 and 2000 characters, respectively) using the electronic submission system at https://cmt.research.microsoft.com/VAKDSI2009/

Please make at least a preliminary submission well before the deadline to avoid any last minute technical problems (you can modify or delete your submission until the deadline).

Specific Formatting Instructions

Our publication schedule is quite tight. Please observe the following instructions to avoid some typical mistakes which may cause delays.

The articles will be printed in grayscale. You should try to make your figures such that they are understandable also in grayscale. If you have some figures for which color is absolutely essential then you should mention in caption that a color version of the figure is available in the online pdf version of the paper — your paper as a whole should of course be understandable without color also.

ACM requires that all fonts are embedded in the pdf file, see the original workshop submission instructions for pointers about this. One way to prepare a proper pdf file is to conform to the PDF/A (ISO 19005-1:2005) standard. (If you have access to Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 you can convert a pdf file to PDF/A standard as follows. Go to "Advanced → Preflight... → Standards → Save as PDF/A", click "Continue...", choose "Save as PDF/A-1b" and click "Continue...". Choose "Create PDF/A-1b according to the following PDF/A-1b conversion profile...", choose "sRGB" viewing or printing condition, make sure that "Apply corrections" is checked and finally click "Save as...". Check that there are no warnings.)

Please also check that the paper size is set to US Letter. (In Adobe Acrobat choose "File → Properties... → Description". "Page Size" should be "8,50 x 11,00 in".)
